Glycolic Acid

Exfoliation — precisely pH-buffered

The smallest AHA molecule — which means it penetrates more effectively than lactic or mandelic acid. It dissolves the bonds holding dead skin cells together, clearing the surface, smoothing texture, and improving the absorption of everything applied after. The difference between a glycolic toner that works and one that doesn't is almost entirely pH. Brooks holds at 4.8–5.2 — active enough to exfoliate, stable enough not to compromise the microbiome.

Lactobacillus Ferment + Inulin

Microbiome protection

Glycolic acid's acidity can disturb the skin's microbial ecosystem. Lactobacillus Ferment actively supports that ecosystem while the acid does its work. Inulin — a prebiotic — feeds the beneficial bacteria, giving the microbiome what it needs to stay stable under the exfoliating conditions the formula creates. Together they make Brooks a glycolic toner you can use consistently without degrading the foundation underneath.

Arginine

Prickly Pear + Agave

Texas botanicals — soothing

Two plants that evolved in the Texas desert to survive extreme conditions. Opuntia Ficus-Indica (Prickly Pear) stem extract delivers betalain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory polysaccharides that calm the skin after exfoliation. Agave Americana leaf extract binds moisture and soothes — giving the freshly revealed skin what it needs to stay comfortable rather than reactive.

Ectoin + Trehalose

Barrier stabilizers

Two osmolytes that protect the skin's cellular environment under the stress of exfoliation. Ectoin stabilizes the barrier and reduces inflammation. Trehalose protects cell membranes. Together they ensure the nightly exfoliation cycle doesn't create cumulative barrier damage over time.

Panthenol

Recovery support

Provitamin B5 — converts to pantothenic acid in the skin where it accelerates barrier repair and reduces redness. Applied after glycolic exfoliation, it supports the skin's overnight recovery so the next morning reveals the result rather than the reaction.

Glycerin

Hydration anchor

A foundational humectant that draws water into the skin and holds it there. In a toner that also exfoliates, glycerin ensures the formula is delivering hydration alongside the acid rather than leaving the skin tight or dry after application.

On a Brooks evening, follow with Laguna Madre if you use it, then Palo Duro to seal the barrier and support overnight recovery. The exfoliated surface means everything applied after absorbs more effectively.

Reserve Caddo and Desert Rose for their own separate evenings. Glycolic acid and copper peptides are pH-incompatible, and layering an exfoliant with a bakuchiol oil is more active load than most skin needs in a single night. Alternate rather than stack.

How to use it

Evening only

After cleansing, apply 4–6 drops to a cotton pad and sweep across the face, avoiding the eye area. Or press directly into skin with clean hands. Allow 5-10 minutes before applying anything else.

Frequency

Start with 2–3 evenings per week. Most people can build to nightly use within 2–3 weeks. If you notice persistent redness or sensitivity, reduce frequency rather than stopping entirely.

With Caddo or Desert Rose

Alternate evenings — Brooks one night, Caddo or Desert Rose the next. Glycolic acid and copper peptides are pH-incompatible when layered. Bakuchiol oil on a freshly exfoliated face is more active load than most skin needs nightly.

SPF required

Glycolic acid accelerates cell turnover, leaving newer skin at the surface. That skin is more sensitive to UV damage. SPF 30+ every morning is non-negotiable when using an AHA toner — it's what protects the results you're building.

Why pH matters

Glycolic acid only exfoliates at low pH. Many toners market "glycolic acid" but formulate at a pH too high to be active — the acid is on the label but not working in the bottle. Brooks is formulated and tested at pH 4.8–5.2. That's where the exfoliation actually happens.

At 10%, urea acts as both a humectant and a gentle keratolytic — drawing water into the skin while softening the surface for better absorption of everything applied after. The concentration that moves the needle.

Your skin has a built-in moisturizing system called the Natural Moisturizing Factor — a precise blend of amino acids, PCA, lactates, and other hygroscopic compounds that live in the outer layer of skin and hold water there. When it's intact, skin stays plump and comfortable regardless of humidity. When it's depleted — from over-cleansing, aging, harsh products, or environmental stress — skin becomes chronically dry in a way that no cream can fully fix from the outside.

Llano Renewal rebuilds it. The formula contains 10% Urea plus thirteen of the NMF's core components — delivered in a tonic that absorbs into the skin's own moisture management layer rather than sitting on top of it. At low concentrations urea is a humectant — it draws water into the skin. At 10% it also acts as a gentle keratolytic, softening the bonds between dead skin cells without the irritation of AHAs. This dual action clears the surface and opens the skin for the NMF complex underneath to absorb properly. Urea is also a natural component of the NMF itself — Llano is both delivering it and triggering the skin to retain it.

Skin-identical moisture retention

Thirteen components of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor delivered together: Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Aspartic Acid, PCA, Glycine, Alanine, Serine, Valine, Proline, Threonine, Isoleucine, Histidine, and Phenylalanine. These are the exact hygroscopic compounds the skin uses to hold water in its outer layers. Supplying them externally — in the forms the skin recognizes — replenishes what aging, cleansing, and environmental stress deplete. Apply Llano Renewal after cleansing, allow 60 seconds, then follow with your PM serum — Caddo, Desert Rose, or Laguna Madre. Urea's keratolytic action softens the surface and the NMF replenishment opens the barrier, meaning whatever comes after absorbs more effectively than it would on unprepped skin.

Finish with Palo Duro. The ceramide complex seals everything in and gives the NMF the barrier environment it needs to hold moisture overnight.

How to use it

Evening only

After cleansing, press a small amount onto clean, damp skin until absorbed. Damp skin helps the urea and NMF components bind more effectively — pat dry but don't wait until your skin is completely dry.

Layering

Llano goes on first — it's a tonic, not a serum. Apply, allow 60 seconds, then layer your PM serum on top. Palo Duro last. The order matters: tonic, serum, cream.

With Brooks

Brooks and Llano Renewal work well on alternating evenings. Brooks exfoliates and clears. Llano rebuilds what the exfoliation reveals. Used together as a rotation they create a complete overnight renewal cycle.

Week 4+

NMF restoration is a gradual process. Most people notice improved baseline hydration and reduced skin tightness within two weeks. The full benefit — skin that holds moisture independently rather than relying on topical products — builds over consistent use.

A note on urea

Urea has a reputation for being harsh — that reputation comes from higher-concentration formulas (20%+) used for very rough skin on the body. At 10%, urea is gentle enough for the face and well-tolerated by most skin types. If you have extremely sensitive or compromised skin, start with 2–3 evenings per week and build from there.

Why the NMF matters

The Natural Moisturizing Factor is what makes the difference between skin that holds moisture on its own and skin that only feels hydrated when you have cream on. Creams hydrate from the outside.
